The most effective way to prevent fires is through education. By providing our community with the knowledge and tools to recognize hazards, practice safe habits, and prepare for emergencies, we help reduce the risk of fires before they start. Through school programs, community outreach, and public safety resources, we are committed to building a safer, more informed community.
Fire investigation plays a critical role in improving safety, preventing future incidents, and holding individuals accountable when fires are caused by negligence or unlawful activity. The District maintains a zero-tolerance approach to reckless or illegal fire activity, and violations of fire laws or regulations will be thoroughly investigated and pursued through appropriate enforcement actions.
Through professional investigation and enforcement, the District works to deter dangerous behavior, support public safety, and protect the lives, property, and natural resources of the Cottonwood community.
Fire Marshal Mike Weeger and Fire Captain John Gleason proudly serve the Cottonwood community as full-time sworn Peace Officers and Fire Investigators with the Cottonwood Fire Protection District. Both are also active members of the Shasta County Arson Task Force.
In this role, they are responsible for determining the origin and cause of fires, enforcing fire codes and fire-related laws, and supporting the District’s mission of prevention, education, and public safety.
As sworn Peace Officers, they have the legal authority to conduct investigations, collect and preserve evidence, interview witnesses, issue citations, make arrests, and pursue enforcement actions when fire laws or regulations are violated.
This authority ensures that negligent or unlawful fire activity is addressed appropriately and that responsible parties can be held accountable when their actions endanger the community.

Educating our community is the core foundation to successful Fire Prevention program. Our department provides valuable information to all ages increasing community awareness and safety.

Starting Spring 2022, our Department will begin updating its annual business inspections for commercial properties within the community.

Pre-fire planning is a crucial step in insuring the safety of building occupants and reducing property damage during an emergency. A Pre-fire plan is created based on information collected during an annual business inspection.
